Dance Bulgaria

danceThis one week tour will be based in Dobursko, a small village in the southern foothills of Rila Mountain, with extensive views to the Pirin and Rhodope Mountains. There will be several opportunities to dance with local folklore groups, and some dance tuition by Mitko Petrov. There will also be plenty of other activities, local walks to see the wealth of flowers, butterflies and birds, a chance to explore the village and visit the astonishingly beautiful village church, and excursions to the huge and impressive Rila Monastery, the old quarter of Bansko, homely Rozhen Monastery and Bulgaria’s smallest town, Melnik, with its sandstone pyramids, and famous wine, reportedly a favourite with Winston Churchill.

Cathy’s interest in Bulgarian danestinarkancing began at college when she chanced upon a Balkan Dance group in Oxford. She was attracted by the unusual rhythms of Bulgarian music and the variety of dances from different regions of the country. In the early 1980’s the British-Bulgarian Friendship Society awarded her a scholarship to attend a folk dancing course in Plovdiv, alongside Bulgarian students learning to become
dance tutors.

In 1988 she was awarded the Society for International Folk Dance teachers’ certificate. She has led a number of successful folk dance trips to Bulgaria organised by the BBFS
